This course has been designed to develop your knowledge of current trends in photography, learn to interpret photo-imaging assignment briefs, consult with clients to refine objectives of photography assignments, select appropriate technologies and workflows to capture images, employ aesthetic, conceptual, compositional and technical skills to photo-imaging outcomes and allow you to gain exposure to a variety of shooting styles.

During the course you will learn the aspects of commercial, editorial/photo journalism, portraiture and fine art photography and will work with such topics as sports and action photography, landscapes, nature, architecture, interiors, fashion, glamour, stock imagery and event photography. You will also learn extensive digital post production skills with Adobe Photoshop to enable you to create dynamic imagery through graphic effects and touch up your photos to build a professional and diverse portfolio of work.

This course offers regular industry excursions and location photo shoots, which will give you amazing opportunities for portfolio development. An emphasis on industry involvement and extracurricular projects is encouraged to all students to help promote opportunities for success. Throughout the course there will be many opportunities for you to work with our students studying in our fashion, make-up, beauty, styling and interior design courses giving you further opportunities and experience.

The Diploma of Photo Imaging is vocationally orientated and provides diverse, professional and exciting outcomes in photography. Emphasisis is placed on all assessments being relevant to the current photographic industry. Major projects encourages students to showcase their unique signature styles. Final assessments include a portfolio and exhibition to help promote students as artists and also serve as a valuable marketing tool for your career.

This qualification reflects the role of photography practitioners who possess a sound theoretical knowledge base and use a range of specialised and technical competencies to previsualise, plan, carry out and evaluate photography services.

Qualification & Units of Competency:

On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded the ‘CUA50915: Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging’ , which is nationally recognised as part of the Australian Qualifications Framework.

On successful completion of the course students will receive competencies in the following units:

Entry Requirements

Entry to this qualification is limited to those able to demonstrate photo imaging skills that support learning at Diploma level. In particular, they must be able to provide evidence of their ability to:

  • produce a body of photo imaging work demonstrating the ability to respond effectively to different photo imaging challenges and requirements, and the capacity to refine concepts and images in line with current industry standards
  • engage with the design process by developing solutions through research, reflection and the generation and refinement of ideas
  • apply knowledge of the photo imaging industry, its trends and traditions

apply technical photo imaging knowledge and skills, including:

  • use of a range of professional digital and / or film cameras and accessories for image capture
  • selection and use of professional camera and lighting equipment for a range of subjects in different physical environments
  • enhancement and manipulation techniques using current industry standard software
  • use of electronic processing techniques.

Those skills and knowledge may have been acquired through personal or work experience, or through formal study.

Course will be run on a Friday from 9am - 4.30pm for a duration of 3 Years

Recently the government announced that as of the 1st of January 2017 the existing VET FEE-HELP scheme will be replaced with VET Student Loan, however they are yet to release which courses will be eligible for the new Loan arrangement. This new arrangement will impact all Registered Training Organisations that currently offer VET FEE-HELP Approved courses.

Once we receive all details about the new Vet Student Loans, we will update this page and contact all enrolled students.


Although we are waiting on information, the college recommends that if you are interested in commencing this course next year that you enrol to reserve a place in the 2017 intake. Once the government finalises arrangements we will contact you regarding the changes.

Full Course Cost (Payment Plan): $16,500.00
  • Non-Refundable Enrolment Fee: $1,000.00
  • Balance paid in weekly direct debit instalments (with Ezypay) over course duration: $15,500.00

Students will be provided with learning resources and any additional equipment required that is not listed below to fulfill the course requirements.

Required Course Equipment:

Students will need to provide the following equipment:

  • 35mm DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) Camera. Minimum requirement of 1 lens, although additional lenses are useful.
  • Tripod
  • A Laptop Computer is required for this course - see detailed requirements below
  • Portable Hard Drive


Students accepted into the program will be required to have a laptop computer with a wireless network connection. The following minimum specifications are required:

  • Wireless 802.11a/b/g/n
  • Minimum 4Gb RAM
  • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
  • 2Ghz or faster processor
  • Web Browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari) (free online)

Financial Assistance

Eligible students may be able to apply to Centrelink for either Youth Allowance (for full-time students aged 16 to 24) or Austudy (for full-time students aged 25 years or over). For more information visit the Centrelink website.

Application and Enrolment Process:

  1. Phone the Gold Coast (07) 55 938 335 OR Brisbane (07) 38 541 395 campus to arrange your interview OR fill out the online Application Form and arrange a phone interview if you cannot come into either campus.
  2. Attend your interivew or complete the phone interview.
  3. You will recieve your enrolment paperwork and the student handbook at the interview and information on the required evidence you will have to supply to support your application.
  4. After reading the student handbook and enrolment forms, if you wish to enrol you must submit the enrolment form along with any requested evidence (original or certified copies of originals).Our administration staff will check the completed enrolment form and evidence you supplied to demonstrate your suitability for the course. We may have to ask you further information or discuss your options if you don't meet the suitability requirements for the course. If you do meet the suitability requirements for the course, we will send you a Confirmation of Enrolment, along with a VET FEE-HELP application form or payment plan forms, whichever is applicable.
  5. You will receive your first VET FEE-HELP invoice notice (for students obtaining a VET FEE-HELP loan) no more than one calendar month before the start of study and at least two weeks before the first census date.
