This course has been designed to develop your knowledge of current trends in photography, learn to interpret photo-imaging assignment briefs, consult with clients to refine objectives of photography assignments, select appropriate technologies and workflows to capture images, employ aesthetic, conceptual, compositional and technical skills to photo-imaging outcomes and allow you to gain exposure to a variety of shooting styles.

During the course you will learn the aspects of commercial, editorial/photo journalism, portraiture and fine art photography and will work with such topics as sports and action photography, landscapes, nature, architecture, interiors, fashion, glamour, stock imagery and event photography. You will also learn extensive digital post production skills with Adobe Photoshop to enable you to create dynamic imagery through graphic effects and touch up your photos to build a professional and diverse portfolio of work.

The Diploma of Photo Imaging reflects a sound knowledge base and a range of specialised and technical competencies

This course offers regular industry excursions and location photo shoots, which will give you amazing opportunities for portfolio development. An emphasis on industry involvement and extracurricular projects is encouraged to all students to help promote opportunities for success. Throughout the course there will be many opportunities for you to work with our students studying in our fashion, make-up, beauty, styling and interior design courses giving you further opportunities and experience.

The Diploma of Photo Imaging is vocationally orientated and provides diverse, professional and exciting outcomes in photography. Emphasisis is placed on all assessments being relevant to the current photographic industry. Major projects encourages students to showcase their unique signature styles. Final assessments include a portfolio and exhibition to help promote students as artists and also serve as a valuable marketing tool for your career.

This qualification reflects the role of photography practitioners who possess a sound theoretical knowledge base and use a range of specialised and technical competencies to previsualise, plan, carry out and evaluate photography services.

Qualification & Units of Competency:

On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded the ‘CUA50915: Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging’ , which is nationally recognised as part of the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Course Duration:

Full Time: This course runs 2 days on-campus and 1 day off-campus (supervised study) over 1 Year, 9am - 3:30pm. Mon-Wed

Part Time: Course will be run on a Monday or Wednesday from 9am - 3:30pm over three years

Student Entry Requirements:

Formal Education or Work/Life Experience:

To enrol into the Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging the applicant does not have to have completed their senior secondary schooling but must have the conceptual, technical and organisational skills to use of a range of professional digital and/or film cameras and accessories to produce a folio of photo imaging work that demonstrates the ability to respond effectively to different photo imaging challenges and requirements; as well as answering yes to most of the questions below:

  • Have you got an eye for colour and light?
  • Do you have an eye for detail and artistic flair?
  • Do you have an understanding of photographic equipment and settings and can explain terms like aperture?
  • Do you have a body of photographic work you can bring in and discuss?

These skills and knowledge may have been acquired through personal or work experience, or through formal study.

Prerequisites:

There are no prerequisites for entry into this qualification.

Course Fees

VET Student Loans

From the 1st of January 2017 a new government student loan scheme became available to students enrolling into eligible courses at approved providers.

VET Student Loans are available for students who meet the eligibility requirements to assist with payment of the course fees. Students who take out a VET Student Loan will have a HELP debt which is due to the Commonwealth until it is repaid.

Required Course Equipment:

Students will need to provide the following equipment:

  • 35mm DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) Camera. Minimum requirement of 1 lens, although additional lenses are useful.
  • Tripod
  • A Laptop Computer is required for this course - see detailed requirements below
  • Portable Hard Drive

LAPTOP / NOTEBOOK REQUIREMENT:

Students will be required to have a laptop computer with a wireless network connection. The following specifications are recommended:

  • A Wireless Laptop (PC or MAC)
  • Minimum 8Gb RAM (Preferrably 16GB RAM)
  • 2Ghz or faster processor
  • Web Browser (e.g. Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Internet Explorer)
  • Anti Virus Software.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader (free online)
  • For Graphic work it is recommended you have a Mouse
  • Microsoft Office 2007 or better with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access.*
    If using a Mac -> Pages, Numbers and Keynote can be used, however prefer Microsoft Office
  • Photoshop CC and Lightroom CC (Student Versions)* - Photography Packages Available

Application and Enrolment Process:

  1. Phone the Gold Coast (07) 55 938 335 OR Brisbane (07) 38 541 395 campus to arrange your interview OR fill out the online Application Form and arrange a phone interview if you cannot come into either campus.
  2. Attend your interivew or complete the phone interview.
  3. You will recieve your enrolment paperwork and the student handbook at the interview and information on the required evidence you will have to supply to support your application.
  4. After reading the student handbook and enrolment forms, if you wish to enrol you must submit the enrolment form along with any requested evidence (original or certified copies of originals).Our administration staff will check the completed enrolment form and evidence you supplied to demonstrate your suitability for the course. We may have to ask you further information or discuss your options if you don't meet the suitability requirements for the course. If you do meet the suitability requirements for the course, we will send you a Confirmation of Enrolment, along with payment plan forms.
  5. You will receive your first invoice notice no more than one calendar month before the start of study and at least two weeks before the first census date.
